Meet Captain Bobblebeard, the imaginary skipper of our juniors. A jolly, rosy-cheeked fellow, who, despite his name, has no beard to bobble. No one had ever seen a drop of sea in his life, but believe it or not, he is the ultimate guide for our Cadets, navigating them through the waterways with his immense knowledge of currents, winds, and...um...imaginary sea monsters. Every ripple in the river tells a story, and no one is better at interpreting those stories than Captain Bobblebeard. And the Cadets, they listen with rapt attention, their eyes wide with amazement, giggles escaping their lips whenever Captain Bobblebeard slips a silly joke into his tales. From the radiant mornings to the tranquil dusks, the Canoe Cadets of Connecticut conquer the rivers with their paddles, their spirits, and their whimsical captain. Connecticut is their playground, and canoeing is their favorite game. For over 50 years, Frontier Camp has been dedicated to making disciples of Jesus by sharing God’s Word amidst the beauty of His creation. Since our founding in 1969, we’ve been licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services and are proudly accredited by the American Camping Association. We’re also a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. Our mission is to use Christian camping and outdoor recreation as a means to support local churches in fulfilling the Great Commission—evangelizing people of all ages and discipling believers toward deeper maturity in Christ. Frontier Camp offers a dual ministry: during the summer, we host a 10-week youth camp, and throughout the rest of the year, we serve as a retreat facility for churches and like-minded religious organizations. Whether through summer camps or retreats, our goal remains the same: to expose people to Christ and encourage their spiritual growth through His Word and by reflecting His character in everything we do. While we provide top-notch recreation and exciting programming, the heart of our camp is the spiritual impact, rooted in the truth of God’s inerrant Word.
Today, the Meigs Point Nature Center (MPNC) is open to all ages in the Connecticut State Park System. This exciting and vital environmental learning center offers a variety of educational programs and activities to the community. All programs at MPNC are funded through donations from the Friends of Hammonasset. Additionally, MPNC is proud to have a team of dedicated volunteers who help make the facility a great resource for the local community. At MPNC, we strive to provide a safe and fun environment for visitors to explore and learn about the natural world. Through our educational programs and activities, we hope to instill a sense of environmental stewardship and responsibility in all visitors. We want to ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty and wonder of Connecticut's natural resources.
