Leading this aquatic army was none other than Cap'n Charlie, a one-legged pelican with a sassy attitude and a bright yellow bucket hat. Charlie had sailed all seven seas (or so he claimed), but he especially loved Florida's coasts where he could savor the juicy fish and soak in the sunshine. He'd swapped his pirate days for a peaceful life, guiding little adventurers on their boating and canoeing escapades. Now, you might be wondering, "A pelican leading a kids' flotilla? That's one heck of a tall tale!" But in Florida, where flamingos strut about like they're on a fashion runway and dolphins playfully race the sunset, a pelican skipper is just another day in paradise. For over 50 years, Frontier Camp has been dedicated to making disciples of Jesus by sharing God’s Word amidst the beauty of His creation. Since our founding in 1969, we’ve been licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services and are proudly accredited by the American Camping Association. We’re also a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. Our mission is to use Christian camping and outdoor recreation as a means to support local churches in fulfilling the Great Commission—evangelizing people of all ages and discipling believers toward deeper maturity in Christ. Frontier Camp offers a dual ministry: during the summer, we host a 10-week youth camp, and throughout the rest of the year, we serve as a retreat facility for churches and like-minded religious organizations. Whether through summer camps or retreats, our goal remains the same: to expose people to Christ and encourage their spiritual growth through His Word and by reflecting His character in everything we do. While we provide top-notch recreation and exciting programming, the heart of our camp is the spiritual impact, rooted in the truth of God’s inerrant Word.
The Caruth Camp has been around for many years, providing a wilderness camping experience to boys who otherwise might not have been able to participate in residential childcare. Experiential learning opportunities were the cornerstone of the program, and it was successful in its mission, albeit limited in scope to 18 participants. In 1997, the camp underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to the Project Harmony program. Project Harmony is a 5 day leadership retreat for middle school students, aimed at teaching children communication and problem-solving skills while addressing any racial tension or conflicts within the schools. During the retreat, participants undergo intensive training in conflict resolution, cultural diversity, environmental awareness, group-building exercises, academics, and camping. This highly successful program has been nationally recognized, and combined with the Summer Camp and other family programs, serves thousands of boys and girls each year.
